Three prisoners serving life terms for San Diego County murders allegedly stabbed a fellow inmate to death at a Riverside County prison, state prison officials said Monday.

The killing occurred around 7 p.m. Saturday at Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Luis Padilla, 42, was stabbed multiple times and pronounced dead a short time later by medical staff.

His three alleged attackers — Juan Madrigal, 26; Jonathan Orduno, 23; and Samuel Ricardez, 28 — were detained and two “inmate-manufactured weapons” were recovered.

Madrigal was convicted by a San Diego jury of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison for fatally shooting a man near the Rolando neighborhood in August of 2020.

Orduno was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the March 2020 fatal shooting of an acquaintance at a San Ysidro motel.

Ricardez was convicted of first-degree murder by a North County jury for the 2012 fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy in Oceanside, and was sentenced to 75 years to life in state prison.

Padilla was serving a life term for a Los Angeles County conviction of preventing/dissuading a victim or witness under specified circumstances, according to CDCR.
