Volusia County government officials ended the countywide burn ban that went into effect on June 6, but officials are urging people to follow safety tips.

Flagler County's burn ban ended Monday.

Volusia County issued the burn ban after its score on the Keetch-Byram Drought Index reached 546 on June 5 ― Flagler County was at 518. The index uses a range to indicate dryness that goes from zero for the wettest condition to 800 for the driest.

Volusia and Flagler counties were at 245 and 258 on Monday respectively.

With the burn ban lifted in Volusia County, residents are allowed to conduct burning activities in compliance with local laws and Florida Forest Service guidelines.

Volusia County Fire Rescue also urged people to use caution.

"(Volusia County Fire Rescue) has already responded to multiple wildfires this year, even when the burn ban was not in place, underscoring the ongoing need for vigilance," according to the county. "Residents should call 911 immediately if they see smoke or fire."

Volusia County Fire Rescue issued the following safety tips:

    • "Never leave outdoor fires unattended and always keep a reliable water source nearby.
    • Burn only yard waste and permissible materials as specified by local regulations.
    • Avoid burning on windy days to prevent unintended fire spread.
    • Maintain a 30-foot defensible space around your home by clearing away trash, dead vegetation, and leaves from yards, roofs, and gutters. Exercise caution when grilling, camping, or discarding cigarettes."
