When Iowa’s scorching temps will give way to severe storms today

A second day of extreme heat and humidity will bring severe weather to Central Iowa by tonight.

We started the day with warm and muggy conditions that popped up a line of heavy downpours in southern Iowa early this morning. That will move east with some lingering storms in southeast Iowa at times during the day today.

The big story for all of us will be extreme heat this afternoon. Highs will again reach the 90s and heat index values (the way it feels) will be just over 100. A Heat Advisory is again in effect today for southwest Iowa from noon through 7 PM.

A strong cold front will come in from the northwest. As it hits the warm, moist and primed atmosphere, the air will start to lift along the front and lead to clouds towering above and rain will begin to come down.

The storms will organize into a complex of storms that will sweep across the state late tonight through early morning Wednesday. Heavy rain in a short amount of time is likely with the storms and could lead to flash flooding, where roads don’t drain quickly, in the early morning hours of Wednesday.

The most likely severe weather elements will be damaging wind and large hail with these storms.
