LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas residents will soon be able to apply for financial assistance with their summer utility expenses.

Residents can apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) starting July 8 on a first-come, first-served basis. LIHEAP is a federal grant program that assists residents with energy bills during the summer and winter.

It’s summer solstice time. What does that mean?

Arkansas LIHEAP offers two types of benefit payments. The regular payment is a one-time payment based on the household income and the number of residents inside the home. The crisis payment is a one-time payment for those facing a disconnection, past due balance or if a bill is prepaid for less than seven days.

Officials with the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas said that $27 million was allocated to this year’s program and the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment said that half of the funds were used during the winter program.

The Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas also noted that 44,278 Arkansans were assisted during the summer program and 46,121 Arkansans were assisted during the winter program last year.
