MADISON, Wis. -- The Dane County Department of Human Services announced Tuesday that over $30,000 is available for older residents to purchase Wisconsin-grown fruit, vegetables, and herbs at farmers' markets and farm stands.

The Area Agency on Aging is using the investment to distribute farmers' market vouchers for $45 to eligible adults, in a partnership with the Seniors Farmer' Market Nutrition Program. The vouchers reflect the program's goal to improve the diets of older adults living with a lower income.

The DHS said the investment provides fresh produce to seniors, and supports the development and expansion of farm markets and stands.

The DHS said the vouchers are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis to Dane County residents over age 60 and Native Americans over age 55. Eligible adults must have gross incomes under $27,861 per year for a one-person household or $37,814 per year for a two person household.

One set of vouchers is available per person, and the DHS said they can be used until Oct. 31. Voucher recipients will also receive a how-to-use brochure, nutrition education manual, and a list of participating farmers' markets.

Eligible Dane County residents must contact the Area Agency on Aging of Dane County. The DHS said as of June 25, there are 125 sets of vouchers remaining.
