Catholic Charities to move, expand services at former LACASA shelter

HOWELL TWP. — Shortly after LACASA moved into a new 56-bed shelter and counseling center off Tooley Road, another community organization laid claim to its former space on Grand River Avenue.

Livingston County Catholic Charities closed on the purchase of 2895 W. Grand River Ave. in Howell Township in April. The move will allow the service organization to beef up existing programs and add new ones, according to Executive Director Adam Perry.

In June 2025, Catholic Charities will move all services — including an adult daycare for those suffering from memory loss and chronic illness, counseling for mental health and substance abuse, senior services and foster care and adoption support — to the building. The organization serves everyone, regardless of their faith.

Perry said organization leaders have hoped to own a property for as long as a decade. The nonprofit currently rents space in Howell and operates out of three locations that total about 12,000 square feet.

The former LACASA shelter has more than 14,000 square feet above grade and an additional 3,000 square feet downstairs. The organization purchased the building from LACASA for $1.5 million and is gearing up for about $1.2 million in renovations this summer.

The organization will create an outdoor garden, where adults with memory loss can work in the soil, water plants, improve mobility and spend time in the sun, Perry said.

"The (adult daycare) program will be able to expand and have additional activities," he said. They currently serve 15-18 adults, but "should be able to go up to 25 at the new space." The growth, he said, could fuel an increase in funding.

Catholic Charities will also add a chapel, highlighting saints and their charitable works with photos and paintings.

The new building will provide more therapy rooms for counseling and substance abuse case management.

"There are spaces that won't be used on day one, so we have the ability to explore community needs and (expansion) in the future," Perry said.
