Aiyuk initiated discussions with the 49ers on Monday regarding his contract status, although specifics on progress have not been disclosed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed talks involving Aiyuk have included both San Francisco and Washington.

“There were some conversations at one point between the 49ers and Commanders,” Schefter stated. “While the Commanders expressed initial interest, they ultimately decided against proceeding with a deal.”

Washington’s interest in Aiyuk is bolstered by general manager Adam Peters’ ties to San Francisco, where he previously served as assistant general manager under John Lynch and played a key role in Aiyuk’s selection as the 49ers’ director of player personnel in 2020. Adding to the intrigue, Washington’s recent top draft pick, quarterback Jayden Daniels, shares a history with Aiyuk from their time together at Arizona State in 2019.

Despite Washington’s apparent interest, San Francisco remains determined to retain Aiyuk, considering him crucial to their ambitions for future success. However, negotiations face hurdles, including financial discrepancies and upcoming decisions regarding quarterback Brock Purdy’s contract.
