If you’ve ever had a sick or injured pet, you know how quickly those veterinary bills can add up. It only takes a few days to rack up thousands in charges. After experiencing these exorbitant costs, you may have purchased pet insurance.

The price of a new policy may seem manageable when your pet is young. However, finding a new insurer is costly as they age and develop pre-existing conditions. This is the stark reality that Nationwide’s recent cancellation of nearly 100,000 policies has thrust upon many pet parents, potentially leaving them in a state of immediate financial distress.

Check out this video from June 24 to see if this veterinarian’s suggestion can offer a solution for you and your four-legged friend.

As a fellow pet parent who deeply cares about my furry companions, I can only imagine the heartbreak of Nationwide’s policy cancellation. I, too, purchased insurance policies for my current dogs when I first brought them home. If I were to try to find a new carrier today, the cost would be more than ten times what I’m paying now, even though neither of my dogs requires any regular medication except one who needs a skin-allergy shampoo. So, what do parents with animals dependent on these policies for life-saving care do? Veterinarian Molly Brinkmann, DVM (@ drmollysays ), has one potential option to consider.

Pet Insurance Option for Those Cancelled by Nationwide

Dr. Molly recommends Pumpkin Pet Insurance as a potential solution for those affected by Nationwide’s policy cancellation. She highlights Pumpkin has already set up a dedicated team to assist Nationwide policyholders in obtaining new insurance. They are committed to finding similar plans and have solutions for pets with pre-existing conditions. If you’re a Nationwide policyholder, you can contact this team by email at nonrenewed@pumpkin.care or by phone at 1-866-273-6369. While most pet insurance companies will not cover pre-existing conditions, Pumpkin may cover some. She describes, “They do consider some curable pre-existing conditions. If your pet is free of that condition for 180 days, they may be covered for that in the future.” That’s good to hear. Although she knows it’s not a solution for everyone, it may be able to help those affected by these cancellations.

Pet parents shared additional options. Viewer @bk_tall revealed, “Thanks so much. I have Embrace for my puppy, who ended up with microvascular liver dysplasia. The bills for the workup would have killed us without insurance, and they’ve been fantastic. I have heard great things about Pumpkin, too. I’m sending this to people getting new puppies.” That’s good to know. Viewer @anita.sirlin shared, “We have Healthy Paws. They’ve been wonderful, and they cover hip dysplasia, spondylitis, and cancer treatment, all of which we needed for my Husky/Malamute. They cover up to 90%.” That’s great to hear.

We can only hope that companies like Pumpkin, who have stepped up to help, can offer a solution for these parents.
