    1964

    June 25, 1964: “Pokegama Plans Tourney Flights”

    Pokegama country club manager Dave Chalberg predicts 12 flights for the annual Pokegama shortstop Saturday and Sunday.

    Defending champion Lou Barle is planning to defend his crown and other top contenders will be former club champion Mike Latimer, Bob Johnson of Silver Bay, and Curt Bradford of Moose Lake. Championship flight players will go 18 holes Saturday and 27 on Sunday in medal scoring.

    Entry fees are $7.50 for championship and $5 for other flights. Prizes will include merchandise certificates. Chalberg says the course is in good condition.

    June 25, 1964: “Gustafson hits 70 for Tourney”

    Al Gustafson of Pengilly fired a 70, just one stroke back of the champion, Saturday at the Jaycee regional Junior golf tournament at Ely.

    Deyak of Ely and Holmboldt tied at 69, with the Ely golfer winning in a playoff. Greg Gustafson of Pengilly was seventh with a 77. Al and Greg are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Gusafson. Grand Rapids Jaycees will sponsor the two athletes in the state Jaycee tournament at Virginia in July.

    Kent Nyberg shot a 79, and Mike Barle had an 88 for the other Grand Rapids scores.

    1974

    June 27, 1974: “Warba-Arbo ball team tops Pengilly”

    Rick King’s single in the twelfth inning that brought Curtis Ainosoja home, helped the Warba-Arbo team beat Pengilly, 7-6, in Central Baseball League action Sunday, June 23.

    Harold Goggleye and Terry Funk pitched for the victors with Goggleye fanning 18 Pengilly batsmen for the win.

    Vernon Schroeder, Jack McCauley and Paul O’Brien stroked key hits for the Warba-Arbo team that is now 5-0 in the league.

    Mike King caught for the Warba-Arbo team. Next action for the team is June 30 at 2 p.m. at Blackberry.

    1994

    June 26, 1994: “Sue Kannas named All-Section”

    Susan Kannas of Grand Rapids was named to the 1994 Section 7AA All-Girls Softball Team, it was announced recently.

    Kannas, a recently graduated senior, played first base for the Indians this season.

    June 26, 1994: “Gilbert, Winkler are All-State”

    Two Itasca Communicty College student-athletes were recently selected as All-State players in baseball for the Minnesota Community College Conference.

    Dan Winkler, a sophomore from Grand Rapids High School, compiled a 5-2 pitching record with a 1.75 earned run average to lead the Vikings on the mound. Winkler also hit .390 and provided solid leadership as a captain.

    Jamie Gilbert, a sophomore from Grand Rapids High School, led ICC in hitting, finishing with a .440 batting average. Gilbert contributed 25 RBIs and 33 hits for the Vikings and also pitched for ICC.

    The Vikings finished as state runner-ups while compiling a 19-13 overall record.

    Both Winkler and Gilbert have committed to play baseball for Mount Marty College, in Yankton S.D.

    June 26, 1994: “Marble Legion team tops Nashwauk”

    Marble 5, Nashwauk 4

    Marble nipped Nashwauk 5-4 in American Legion baseball play Thursday at Marble.

    R.J. Herdman had three hits and drove in three runs to lead Marble. Kris McNamar pitched a fiave-hitter and struck out seven for Marble.

    Mike DeNucci had two hits for Nashwauk.

    Marble is now 2-0 on the year.
