GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A truck hauling an oversized load was deemed responsible for a crash that injured two individuals, including a state trooper, on Monday, the sheriff’s office said.

That crash occurred on Highway 41 (County Line Road) near Black Mingo Creek after a tractor-trailer traveling north hit a section of an 18-wheeler’s cargo load traveling south that was hanging over the divided line on the roadway. After hitting the cargo load, the tractor-trailer collided with the guardrail, turned left, and crossed the roadway, according to the incident report.

The tractor-trailer, which is the second vehicle involved, crossed the roadway and overrode the front end of a South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) car, the third vehicle involved, that was traveling south on Highway 41 before going over the guard rail and sliding down an embankment by the bridge, the report states.

The SCHP car involved was then t-boned by a fourth vehicle. The tractor-trailer was found to be leaking fuel down the embankment, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation and Department of Health and Environmental Control were notified of the spill, the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office said.

As a result of the crash, State Trooper Matthew Gosnell was airlifted to the Grand Strand ER with a broken ankle, broken leg, head laceration, and concussion. Ebony Smith, who was driving the fourth vehicle, was taken to the Kingstree ER with a broken ankle.

Anthony Raley who was driving the tractor-trailer that went down the embankment was taken to the hospital but found to have no apparent injuries, according to the incident report.

Bobby Cribb, driver of the truck carrying the oversized load, was given a ticket for a miscellaneous traffic offense. Cribb was not injured, according to the report.

The Williamsburg County Fire Department also responded to assist at the crash site. The crash happened about 9 miles south of Hemingway.
