CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Winds as high as 65 miles per hour were reported on Tuesday as storms blew through Central Illinois.
The weather event caught weather experts by surprise, as such a rapid jump in wind pressure is uncommon. The gusts blew over trees and powerlines. Adam Alvis, a Humboldt resident, was one of many across the area who experienced storm damage.
“We heard the storm coming, and the wind and the rain got really windy, really loud,” Alvin said. “We heard a strike of lightning and we thought it maybe it hit the cell phone tower. And so we were watching out and looking out the garage, and we had seen and heard the wind and then the tree fell over us.”
CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — A bout of severe thunderstorms swept through Central Illinois on Tuesday, leading to power outages and storm damage.
Thousands are currently without electricity in Champaign and Sangamon Counties. Officials with Ameren told WCIA that they have been hard at work since early Tuesday morning, and plan to work into the night to restore as much power as possible. They are taking extra precautions for their workers to ensure their safety while working in the heat and humidity.
Some of Ameren’s work includes rerouting power in certain communities and removing tree limbs that have downed powerlines.
