BEDFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A teenager was shot during a suspected road rage incident in Bedford County Tuesday night, officials said.

According to the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) , the incident took place just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25 in the area of Normandy Road and Highway 41A.

Lieutenant John Sweeney with BCSO said that one vehicle involved in the incident was carrying four teens. Meanwhile, the suspect vehicle contained a man in a white late 1990’s or early 2000’s Saturn SUV.

Authorities reported that the man shot at the teens through the back window of his car. Passengers in the car reportedly said a brake-check may have led up to the incident.

“To just in a few minutes over a traffic altercation, pulling out a gun and committing murder possibly, that is not an individual that I would say is stable,” Chief Deputy Nikia Elliott of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office said. “So we feel absolutely certain that we need to get that person off the street because I can guarantee you they’re probably driving everyday and they’re passing my family, they’re passing your family along the roadway.”

A bullet reportedly went through the headrest and struck a teen girl in the front passenger seat. She was then transported via helicopter to an area hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Meanwhile, investigators said video from area residents will be key in this case, as some of the closest businesses are around 10-15 minutes away.

“I know that I can’t do it, but if I try to put myself in that family’s shoes, second to my child being okay, that would be my first concern is just that my child is okay, but right close behind that would be I would want to know who was responsible for this. Who thought that a simple traffic disagreement was worth taking my child’s life. So yes, I would be desperate for answers at this point,” Elliott said.
