In Nassau County, lawmakers passed a bill on Monday that bans transgender athletes from competing in women’s and girls’ sports at facilities that are owned by the county.

The Nassau County legislature passed the measure by a vote of 12-5. Lawmakers voted on the bill after the county lost its bid earlier this year to block the state from taking legal action against its ban on women’s and girls’ teams that include female transgender players.

Following Monday’s vote, some in the audience shouted “Shame!” in response to the ban, according to published reports.

On Facebook, Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, posted that bill was a "common sense measure to protect the integrity of women participants."

The New York Civil Liberties Union, which had filed an successful lawsuit on behalf of the Long Island Roller Rebels to overturn the earlier ban, said the fight isn’t over, according to published reports. The organization plans to take the county to court over the bill that was signed on Monday.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who had issued an executive order in support of the ban in February, is expected to sign the bill.
