    Elkin Wet Lightning takes big win at Galax

    GALAX, VA — Elkin Wet Lightning took the team on the road and up the mountain to Galax, Virginia on Saturday to compete with the Galax Maroon Tide swim team. Both the girls and boys brought home big wins for EWL.

    EWL dominated in the distance freestyle events. In the girls 10 & under 50-meter freestyle race, Makaila Schosser (42.57), Ellie Dimmette (45.17), Anabelle Lowder (59.80) and Inesleigh Westra (1:16.08) all earned points for their team with 2nd thru 5th place finishes. Elkin swimmers swept the same event for the boys with Ricky Royall (46.10), his younger brother Eli (53.53), Samuel Boggs (55.57), Michael Creed (1:02.18) and Ryan St. Cyr ( 1:13.43) claiming 1st through 5th places. In the girls 11-14 age group, Mikayla Dickerson (1:21.78), Johannah Johnson (1:37.91), Graceanna Church (1:40.30), Melia Orta (1:41.67), Ashlyn Brooks (1:45.94) and Aliza Lowder (2:17.23) took all top 6 spots. Cohen Long (1:39.67) and Grant Leeds (1:42.25) claimed 1st and 2nd places for the boys. In the girls 15-18 age race, Amelia Presley (1.03.35), Mya Brown (1:21.09) and Gabby Farmer (1:22.55) battled it out to claim the top 3 place finishes. And in the boys same race, Troy Snow (1:00.59), Caleb White (1:07.22), Sawyer Poindexter (1:03.36), Parker Church (1:09.31), Michael Tragone (1:11.81), Cade Russell (1.32.78) and younger brother Ryder (1:37.15) finish strong for EWL while taking the 2nd thru 8th place finishes.

    With several swimmers swimming the breaststroke for the first time in competition, EWL had strong finishes. In the girls 8 & under event, Teagan Hayes (28.64) took the gold medal with a first place finish while teammates Raegann Pendergraft (41.95) and Ember Dobson (48.49) took 3rd and 4th place. Matthew Gentry (27.98) took the top spot for the boys while Jonah Johnson (29.84) grabbed the 2nd place finish. Then both boy’s younger brothers, Luke Johnson (41.01) and Jack Gentry (56.35) picked up the 3rd and 4th place finishes. In the girls 9-10 age group, Ester Dickerson (29.01), Audrey Corcoran (29.31) and Haven Simmons (32.59) claimed 1st thru 3rd place finishes. Ricky Royall (32.56) grabbed a 3rd place finish for the boys. In the girls 11-12 age race, Leyna Simmons (54.31), Annabele Dickerson (57.50), Tenley Hayes (57.88), Johannah Johnson (59.89) and Shayla Ange (1;04.77) took the 2nd thru 6th place finishes, while EJ Lowder (1:07.08) took the gold in the boys’ race. In the girls 13-14 age group, Mikayla Dickerson (44.26) took the top spot while Jocelyn Johnson (1:01.49) and Brylie Ange (1:07.39) claimed the 3rd and 4th place finishes. In the girls 15-18 age race, Elissa Dickerson (47.08) grabbed a 3td place finish while Mark Davis (39.15) and Webb Snyder (39.52) battled it out for a 1st and 2nd place finish for the boys. Xander Carpentier (46.43) and Cade Russell (1:14.63) claimed the 4th and 6th place finishes.

    In the rigorous butterfly event, EWL, again, had many swimmers competing for the first time. In the boys 8 & under race, Matthew Gentry brought home the gold with a time of 25.74. Hadley Gaddis (25.71) and Audrey Corcoran (34.43) took 2nd and 4th place in the girls 9-10 race while James St. Cyr (29.06) took 2nd place for the boys. In the girls 11-12 age group, Summer Jones (50.57) claimed 3rd place and Caleb Bumgarner (55.38) took 1st place for the boys. In the 13-14 age group races, Amara Simmons (38.48), Mia Swaim (41.62) and Paisley Russell (43.95) swept the top three spots. Amelia Presley (32.28) grabbed gold in a tight race in the girls 15-18 battle. Troy Snow (29.37), Mark Davis (29.97) and Michael Tragone (35.52) took 1st, 2nd and 4th places in the boys battle.

    EWL will next host the Reeves Rapids of Mount Airy at the Elkin City Pool on Saturday, June 29. There is no admission fee and the public is invited to attend. Competition will begin at 9 a.m.
