Experts say the Palmetto State's population of armadillos continues to grow. Not too long ago, it was a rarity to ever see an armadillo in the Carolinas and Georgia, but not anymore.

Some homeowners around the Upstate have reported seeing the invasive animal more frequently in recent months. Armadillos are not native to this part of the country. Wildlife officials say that the animal is not often a target of attack for predators, that's why the armadillo population keeps growing.

The animals are often referred to as "opossums on the half shell" but experts say they are more to carry disease than opossums are. Also all the growth and building going on in the Upstate in previously wooded areas, has brought on more armadillo sightings.

Homeowners can call wildlife control companies to set traps. However, in South Carolina any armadillo caught in a trap must be euthanized.
