Born and raised in Danville, California, Steffens was introduced to the sport at a young age, following in the footsteps of her father, a three-time All-American at the University of California, Berkeley.

Steffens officially started playing water polo at age eight, but her passion for the sport was ignited much earlier. Despite exploring other sports such as soccer, gymnastics, swimming, and dance, water polo was the one that felt like home to her. At the age of 16, she left home to begin national training and pursue her Olympic dreams.

Her dedication to the sport is evident in her rigorous training routine , which includes weight training, water conditioning, polo scrimmage, and recovery. She spends approximately 10 hours per day honing her skills, using various tools such as bands, blades, sauce, and kinesiology tape as part of her training and recovery regimen.

Steffens has represented Team USA in the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympics, earning three gold medals. Now she is set to compete in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
