KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is warning people to be vigilant after there have been reports of scammers pretending to be pastors or deacons.

According to KCSO, the scammers reportedly pretend to be pastors or deacons and are using spoofing techniques that allow their messages to appear from the actual pastor’s phone number or similar email addresses.

KCSO said the scammers ask church personnel and members via text or email to send gift card information for them to give to those in need.

“Be aware that if you receive a text or email from your pastor asking for money or donations via gift cards, you may want to reach out to them personally to make them aware they’re being targeted for a new Church scam and to not fall for it.” KCSO wrote.

The sheriff’s office included an example of an email sent to members.

“Hello Sam, Let me know when you’re available
There is something I need you to do for me, I am going into a meeting now with limited phone calls, so please just reply as text
    Pastors name”

The sheriff’s office said the best way to deter these crimes is to know that they are happening and not fall victim to them. KCSO encouraged everyone to “I.R.S.D” meaning Ignore, Screenshot, Report and Delete.

Anyone who has received a message like what is mentioned above or a scam over the past few weeks is asked to send information about it to crimetips@knoxsheriff.org.
