BEDFORD COUNTY (WTAJ) – Faculty and community members took one last lap through Breezewood Elementary School on Wednesday as students prepare to move into a new building in the upcoming school year.

“We have a faculty member, Sandy Burton, who put together a PowerPoint slide and a history of everything that occurred at the building. so that everyone can see and reflect back on, yes I remember when I was here and those were my teachers when I was here,” Breezewood superintendent David Burkett said.

In Jan., school board members voted to close the elementary school in a unanimous vote. The 63 students that remained at the school will be moving to Everett Elementary School.

The school was built in 1959 and did not have any dedicated space for art/music classrooms. It also hadn’t been renovated since 1989. Overall utilization of the building and enrollment has also dropped by 17% since 2018.

“The board has diligently had meetings after meetings,” Superintendent of Everett Area School District David Burkett said back in Jan. about the closing of the school. “This was not an easy decision and they have invested a lot of time in making this decision and I think it’s the right decision for the school district.”

But what’s going to happen to the building?

The school district which had previously stopped taking bids for the building decided the morning of June 26 that they would reopen bidding for the building.

Bids for the building are open until July 16. The school board requires a narrative from all bidders on what is going to be done with the building.
