NEVADA, Mo. — There are a ton of summer camps happening in the four states area. One college hosted a co-ed camp for young kids in and near Nevada.

The Cottey College basketball program held a youth camp for young girls and boys. The camp was split up in two sessions. A morning session for kindergarten to fourth graders from 9 a.m. to noon. An afternoon session for fifth to eighth graders from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A mixture of current and new comets players help run the camp along with head coach Evan Belk. This particular camp has grown from a small group of kids to now groups of several campers.

Coach Belk and senior Sarah Hunt spoke about the camp.

Coach Belk said, “My main focus is let’s have a great time, let’s learn the game at a high level. But hopefully we’re laughing and hopefully we’re having smiles. Hopefully we’re having a great time because I think we’ve lost some of that in our culture. And you know, it’s about let’s have a great time, let’s learn the game and hopefully it’s something they can do for a lifetime.”

Hunt said, “Definitely been a place where I can learn and grow and I really love working with these kids and it’s so much fun to me now to get to work with them and just teach them things that I wish I’d known at that age. Like, it’s so fun to get to give that to them and learn who they are and form friendships with them.”

The camp began on Tuesday and will wrap up on Friday with a camp picture. The campers will get a t-shirt as well.
