South Carolina High School League Commissioner Jerome Singleton’s visit Wednesday with officials from Spartanburg County public high schools included questions about the new Mountain View Prep charter school in the county, which has drawn criticism from some in the high school football community as it builds its football program.

Superintendents, principals, and athletic directors from the schools and their districts were in attendance at the meeting at Woodruff High School, according to Woodruff athletic director Mike Morris. The meeting lasted just over an hour-and-a-half Wednesday morning.

Singleton acknowledged afterward that a variety of topics related to the league were discussed and that “there were questions about Mountain View Prep.”

He pointed out that since Mountain View does not formally become an SCHSL member until Monday (July 1st) the league has no jurisdiction over the school until then.

He added that league members have the ability to change the rules as to when governance over a new member can begin through the SCHSL legislative process.

The meeting with the commissioner comes as some local coaches have expressed to 7 News Sports their disappointment in losing players to Mountain View.

Mountain View’s football program has recently added players from other area high schools as it puts together its inaugural team.

The most notable of its newcomers is rising junior running back Jaylen McGill, a major college prospect, who rushed for over 1,600 yards as a sophomore last season at Broome.
