The California Department of Motor Vehicles has added another service that state residents can complete online.

Californians renewing their driver's license now have the option of completing the DMV's fail-safe eLearning course in either English or Spanish, the agency announced Tuesday.

The announcement comes a month after the DMV said it will move several simpler tasks online.

The eLearning course has been available in English since 2022. The launch of a Spanish-language version comes as the DMV aims to make services "more accessible and convenient" for the state's diverse population including Spanish speakers.

California DMV will no longer process these services at offices

California has one of the most diverse populations in the country with Latinos accounting for 40% of the state's population, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.

"This is a significant step in our ongoing efforts to meet the needs of all Californians," DMV Director Steve Gordon said in a statement. "By expanding our services to include a Spanish language option for the eLearning renewal course, we are ensuring that more Californians can take advantage of our easy-to-use online services."

The online interactive course is designed as an "alternative for individuals who have difficulty with traditional exams or prefer a different learning method," the DMV said.

The eLearning course takes 45 minutes to complete and includes seven modules with quizzes after each module. Each quiz can be taken multiple times, making it a no-fail option for Californians.

Californians can access the course 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can use a computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile device to complete the course.

The DMV said it plans to add a Chinese option for the eLearning course. No date is set yet for the launch of a Chinese translation.
