The impromptu face-to-face meeting between All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers might finally have the two sides on track for a contract extension.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday that Aiyuk and the 49ers had a "good meeting." The 49ers were able to explain to the 26-year-old wideout that they aren't looking to trade him. They've decided to try and work towards a deal.

They want Aiyuk on the team in 2024 and beyond, but of course, everything still hinges on the contract negotiations.

"Aiyuk and 49ers brass met on Monday at Aiyuk's request. This was a good meeting. From what I was told, both sides said things that needed to be said, and they're going to keep working," Pelissero said, when appearing on "The Insiders."

He added, "There's never been a trade request from Brandon Aiyuk. That hasn't changed. The 49ers' stance hasn't changed, either, despite getting trade calls on Aiyuk going back to draft week. They're moving forward, and they want Aiyuk to be a part of the team in 2024."

Aiyuk asked for a meeting with San Francisco after posting a TikTok video of him telling Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels the team didn't want him back.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers do want to keep Aiyuk, but they don't want him back at the price he's seeking. Aiyuk increased his value in the 2023 season after hauling in 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.

The timing is especially tough for San Francisco in a robust wide receivers market. Minnesota Vikings star wideout Justin Jefferson topped the market on a four-year, $140 million deal.

Even Jaylen Waddle, who had less production than Aiyuk last season, walked away with a three-year, $84.75 million extension with the Miami Dolphins.

Whatever the 49ers decide to do won't be cheap. They could reward Aiyuk with a rich contract, or let his deal expire, franchise tag him next year, pay the hefty price tag, and risk alienating him. They could also move on and lose the No. 1 receiving weapon in their offense.

None of the options come without cost and significant risk involved.
