The National Hurricane Center is tracking two tropical waves in the Atlantic Ocean , one of which has the potential to become the season's next named storm.

Designated as Invest 95L , the tropical wave was located several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and continues to produce "disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity," according to the NHC, noting that "further development of this system is anticipated."

The NHC says a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form this weekend several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands while the system moves westward at 15 to 20 mph. The NHC says there is a 40 percent chance of formation through the next 48 hours, with a 70 percent chance of formation through the next seven days.

Closer to the U.S., another tropical wave designated as Invest 94L has a low chance for development as it moves west in the west-central Caribbean Sea, the NHC said early Thursday morning.

The next storm of the season will be named Beryl.
