Ice cream products sold at grocery stores and convenience stores in metro Phoenix are being recalled for a possible listeria contamination, officials announced.

Totally Cool Inc., an ice cream manufacturer based in Owings Mills, Maryland, has recalled 68 products across 13 brands, the Food and Drug Administration announced on Monday. The company ceased the production and distribution of the affected products due to FDA sampling that discovered the presence of listeria monocytogenes, the FDA said.

The products were distributed nationwide and were available in retail locations and direct delivery, the FDA said. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Here's what to know about the recall, which products were affected and what to do if you purchased them.

What ice cream products are being recalled

These are the ice cream products being recalled:

Some of these brands, including Friendly's and Jeni's ice cream products, are sold at metro Phoenix stores like CVS, Fry's, Safeway and Walmart, according to the brands' websites.

What do you do if you purchased recalled products?

Consumers in possession of recalled products are encouraged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact Totally Cool at 410-363-7801 and also at regulatory@totallycoolicecream.com, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

    What is Listeria?

Listeria are bacteria that can contaminate many foods and primarily affects pregnant people and their newborns, adults age 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC. Although other people can be infected, they rarely become seriously sick. When one is infected with Listeria, this infection is called listeriosis.

What are the symptoms of listeriosis?

Symptoms can present in two different ways. According to the CDC, if the listeriosis spreads beyond the intestines, it has become invasive. Symptoms of invasive listeriosis typically begin two weeks after eating contaminated food and include fevers, headaches and flu-like symptoms like muscle aches and fatigue.

When Listeria stays in your intestines, symptoms start within 24 hours and usually last one to three days, according to the CDC. These symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting.

Call a health care provider immediately if you have any of these symptoms.
