Scott and his Scott Free Productions banner have signed on to develop a feature film based on Cirque du Soleil’s O (pronounced eau, the French word for water). It’s not yet clear if Scott will direct the film or not.
Per Deadline , Scott Free is working with Cirque du Soleil’s newly launched entertainment studio, which is being run by Susan Levison.
“I’m thrilled to be joining the vibrant and talented team at Cirque du Soleil during such an exciting time of growth and transformation,” Levison said. “We intend to leverage our extensive IP library to create TV and Film projects that surprise and delight our audience.”
“The new studio division is designed to produce long-form content based on Cirque du Soleil’s DNA and IP,” Deadline’s article states. “The company was founded in 1984 and is behind shows such as Mystere, Ka, Corteo, The Beatles Love, and Mad Apple.”
What else do we know about Ridley Scott’s Cirque du Soleil Movie?
O — which has had permanent residence at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada, since 1998 — takes place above and around a 1.5 million-gallon pool of water. It features various synchronized swimming and aerial acts.
Plot details for the movie remain under wraps at this time.
“We are delighted to be partnering with such a visionary and iconic brand that is Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group,” said Michael Pruss, the president of film production for Scott Free. “We cannot wait to come together and bring the incredible world of O to the big screen for audiences around the world.”
Scott is known for directing movies such as 1979’s Alien, 1982’s Blade Runner, 1991’s Thelma & Louise, 2000’s Gladiator, 2012’s Prometheus, 2015’s The Martian, 2021’s The Last Duel, and, most recently, 2023’s Napoleon. His next movie, Gladiator II, releases in United States theaters this November.
