Legislation introduced by Rep. Frank Sossamon to establish the Faith In Mental Health Pilot Program passed the North Carolina House of Representatives 113-1.

The bill, HB 982, aims to address the ongoing mental health crisis in North Carolina by harnessing the power of faith-based organizations to provide critical support and advocacy for those in need. The program is slated for launch as a pilot bill in Granville and Vance Counties, with plans for expansion statewide.

The program seeks to create a robust support system that can effectively address mental health issues at a grassroots level by integrating the church’s longstanding tradition of goodwill and service.

A key feature of the Faith In Mental Health Pilot Program is the introduction of a certification process for participating churches. This certification will not only bestow a level of credibility but also empower these organizations to become strong advocates and reliable support systems for individuals struggling with mental health issues.

“We are still in the midst of a mental health crisis in North Carolina,” Sossamon said. “This program provides a unique opportunity to tap into the compassion and dedication of our faith communities to support their fellow citizens. By leveraging the trust and connections that churches have within their communities, we can make a meaningful impact on mental health care and support.”

With the bill’s passage in the House, attention now turns to the Senate.
