ATHENS, WV (WVNS) – Southern West Virginia is home to many sports which promote a competitive spirit. In recent years, one sport has been increasing in popularity and competition.

Instead of throwing or catching a ball, esports takes the idea of competition to a whole new level.

According to DLT Solutions, “over 270 universities have varsity esports teams.”

Many people enjoy casually playing their favorite video games to pass the time, but some are competing for money and national titles.

Universities across the Mountain State are adding esports to their athletic departments.

Justin Smith, Assistant Esports Director at Concord University, said esports fits into the culture of southern West Virginia.

“Southern West Virginia just has a long history of being good at sports. We are a competitive people. How many small areas like this can say they get something on TV like the Bluefield/Graham game,” said Smith.

Concord University established the first collegiate esports program in West Virginia back in 2019.

Smith explained that giving students the chance to pursue their hobby at a competitive level is boosting the popularity of esports.

“We’re a culture of winners. We want to do well. You give that mentality and something that students can do that they enjoy, and a lot of schools are taking proactive approaches to make sure it checks boxes for all their curriculum. To make sure it is set up in a healthy way. It’s only going to get stronger and stronger from here,” said Smith to 59News.

Every year, esports increases in value the more popular it gets.

Austin Clay, Esports Director at Concord University, explained that there is a major at Concord students can pursue if they want a job in esports.

“Every year, we are adding 2 billion dollars on top of what the current market cap is. Which is insanely good for the scene and also for any student or anyone coming out of college. That means that the industry is still growing and this means that you should be able to find a job right out of college. At Concord, we added the academic major in 2021, Esports Management,” said Clay to 59News.

Clay told 59News that with the implementation of this major, the goal is for students to not only play at a collegiate level but find a career in such a highly valuable industry.
