North Mississippi adding 471 area code

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — North Mississippi is getting a new area code, as (471) joins the familiar (662).

Mississippi’s Public Service Commission adopted the new area code this month, saying they expect to run out of (662) numbers by the third quarter of 2026.

Existing numbers will be able to keep their original area codes, but new numbers will be assigned the new (471) area code once it’s activated.

The change affects several counties in the News Channel 3 viewing area, including DeSoto, Alcorn, Benton, Coahoma, Lafayette, Marshall, Panola, Tate, Tippah, Tunica and Quitman.

The Public Service Commission says the implementation process will begin in late 2025 or early 2026, and more details will be announced then.
