SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — Severe storms are moving across eastern Utah this afternoon generating strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall.

Active skies have returned this afternoon as the threat of severe thunderstorms is here. A storm system passing through the Pacific Northwest will swing a cold front through the state this afternoon, bringing a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms for many areas today.

Moisture already in place around the state, paired with a passing front through the region is a recipe for storms. Storms are peaking this afternoon and evening, with potential for heavy rain, small hail, and gusty winds.

With the potential of strong storms in the southeastern part of Utah, a Flood Watch has been issued for Grand County south to the Four Corners. This will be in effect through the afternoon and into the evening.

Rainfall rates in excess of 2 inches/hour will quickly produce flash floods , and as a result, we have seen an elevated risk in popular spots in Southern Utah. Flash floods are in the “probable” category for Capitol Reef, the San Rafael Swell, Natural Bridges, Glen Canyon/Lake Powell, Grand Staircase, and Grand Gulch. Flash floods are “possible” for Arches and Bryce Canyon. Zion is the only National Park where flash flooding is not expected.

Keep in mind that flash floods can occur quickly with little to no warning, even if it’s not raining in your location. Slot canyons, normally dry washes, and creeks/rivers are most susceptible. These conditions are life-threatening, so be weather aware before putting yourself in dangerous situations, and stay away from low-lying areas.

Drier and cooler air will move in tonight, with a cool down back to average temperatures for Friday. While a day in the upper 80s sounds very pleasant, we see daytime highs snap back above average as a high-pressure ridge builds for the weekend.

Temperatures will likely climb 5-10 degrees above normal Saturday and Sunday with gusty winds expected. Increasingly dangerous fire conditions are expected in southern Utah this weekend as hot weather, dry conditions, increasing winds, and low relative humidities are expected.  The elevated winds will be ahead of another weak front moving into the area on Monday, dropping temperatures a bit.

The 4Warn Weather Team will continue to monitor conditions and keep you posted on changing conditions both on our 4Warn Weather app as well as on-air and online, we are Good4Utah!
