Friday, June 28: Heating up a bit before rounds of rain this weekend

    By Tom Schmidt,

It was another nice day yesterday as we avoided the 90s once again. Today, however, will be hot and sticky with temperatures reaching the low 90s this afternoon and heat index values feeling near the triple digits, especially in west Missouri.

There is a slight chance for spotty rain showers and some cloud cover this morning from around sunrise to mid-morning. Most spots will stay dry as this activity will largely be focused farther north, but the chance is there this morning.

That is not our only shot of wet weather this weekend. The next is scheduled to arrive overnight Friday into Saturday morning as a cold front approaches. The heaviest rain totals will be north of I-44. The boundary will stall across southern Missouri on Saturday before reigniting and pushing south again late Saturday into Sunday.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms, however, are still possible during the daytime Saturday into Sunday. Some storms could become strong to severe during this time, but the overall risk is low.

After the front has pushed through our region, temperatures will return to cooler conditions. Highs on Sunday will be in the 80s with skies likely slow to become mostly sunny late in the day.

All great things do come to an end. Temperatures on Monday will flirt with the 90-degree mark before skyrocketing on Tuesday. Tuesday may be the warmest day we’ve yet to experience in 2024 as upper 90s are possible.

The long-term pattern suggests that this is a short-lived heat wave. More rain and cooler temperatures may be coming for the middle to end of next week around the 4th of July.
