In recent years, the terms "calorie restriction" and "time-restricted eating" have gained popularity. While they might sound similar, they are not the same. Although fasting might mean you consume fewer calories, weight loss is not always the primary goal.

So, if it's not for weight loss, why do so many people skip breakfast these days? This doctor's explanation, shared in a June 24 video, might help clarify things.

This is a terrific description of two popular methods often used for losing weight. Dr. Mindy Pelz (@ drmindypelz ) is a fasting expert, and her extensive knowledge will make understanding this practice more straightforward.

The Difference Between Calorie Restriction and Fasting

Dr. Pelz says, "In calorie restriction, we never get that dip into the lower blood sugar to tell the body to burn fat." This means that our bodies are taking in fewer calories, and we hope that we have more output so that, ultimately, we are in a deficit. She reports, although "It may give a temporary weight loss result, it will change our setpoint, and we will never be able to sustain that." With time-restricted eating (fasting), "We are bringing your blood sugar down, so you can go over to your fat burner system." No wonder those 80s and 90s diets that told us we had to eat fat-free foods every two hours failed so spectacularly! Even though fasting diets might not be done to limit calories, research indicates, "A practical effect of a fasting diet may be fewer calories because there is less time for regular eating."

How long does it take for the body to burn fat? She reveals, "At the 12 to 16-hour mark, somewhere in that intermittent fasting range, that we see the blood sugar dip, so you can train your body to go burn fat." In a subsequent video, she explains that if we can make it to the 17-hour mark, the process of autophagy begins, and that's when the body starts to repair itself. This is often why many people choose to fast, even if they're not trying to lose weight. Unfortunately, there are still not enough long-term studies to determine whether calorie restriction or time-restricted eating can help to extend the human lifespan. However, animal studies seem to suggest they may. As with any diet plan, consuming adequate nutrients for the body to function optimally is essential. If you have health conditions or concerns, it's always best to speak with a licensed medical professional before beginning any new routine.

Before I began fasting, I would never have imagined I could go a day without food. However, I recently completed my first 72-hour water fast . While I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, believe it or not, I will do it again.
