Raptors point guard Immanuel Quickley's proposed extension stunned NBA fans Friday morning.
The Athletic's Shams Charania reported that Quickley, the 25th overall pick of the 2020 NBA draft, plans to sign a five-year, $175 million contract extension.
Toronto acquired Quickley on Dec. 30, 2023 along with shooting guard R.J. Barrett and a second-round pick from the Knicks for power forward Precious Achiuwa, small forward OG Anunoby and point guard Malachi Flynn.
He played 253 games between the 2020-21 and 2023-24 seasons in New York, where he received 27 starts and averaged 12.9 points on 24.1 minutes per game.
Quickley started 38 times for the Raptors following his trade and averaged 18.6 points while shooting 39.5 percent from three-point range on 7.6 attempts per game. He also averaged career-highs in assists (6.8) and rebounds (4.8) in his brief stint north of the border.
While undoubtedly being paid based on where Toronto thinks his game is headed, fans were still skeptical about the exorbitant price tag.
After all, the average annual value (AAV) on his reported extension ($35 million) is only $859,950 less than Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the 2023-24 runner-up for league MVP, per data from Spotrac .
Among guards, it also ranks ahead of Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray in AAV ($31,65 million) and Jalen Brunson ($26 million)

"makes sense the Knicks traded IQ even more. Were never going to pay him that much behind Brunson," wrote
"HOLY OVERPAY," was a common refrain.
Quickley won't be the only player to get paid handsomely in the coming days. NBA free agency's legal tampering period opens on June 30, and teams can officially sign players to contracts beginning at 12:01 p.m. ET on July 6.
