Former President Donald Trump is facing backlash after he made a comment about "Black jobs" while discussing immigration during the first presidential debate of 2024.

On Thursday (June 27), Trump, the likely Republican nominee, and President Joe Biden faced off for a debate in Atlanta ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash of CNN questioned the two presumptive candidates on hot-button issues including immigration, abortion rights, the economy, and more. Trump repeatedly lied, skirted questions, and hesitated to say that he would accept the results of the 2024 election. Biden's performance left critics with questions about his mental acuity for reelection.

During a discussion about immigration, Trump claimed that Biden allowing "millions" of people to cross the border has been a "big kill on the Black people."

“They’re taking Black jobs now and it could be 18, it could be 19 and even 20 million people,” Trump said during the debate. “They’re taking Black jobs and they’re taking Hispanic jobs and you haven’t seen it yet but you’re gonna see something that’s going to be the worst in our history."

Trump's reference to "Black jobs" faced widespread backlash from debate viewers.

“I’m assuming Trump doesn’t think my job is a ‘black job,’ but MY BLACK TAIL will be up early to do the work of my amazing & beautiful coalition of people that make up TX-30!” Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D) wrote on X , formerly Twitter.

Adrianne Shropshire , executive director of BlackPAC, said Trump's comment was “a hilarious meme all across Black Twitter."

“That there are specific Black jobs for Black people that immigrants are coming to take. Utter nonsense,” she said.
