Last season, one of Antonio Pierce's first moves as interim head coach was to take a gamble. It was a small one, but it eventually paid off big time. The Las Vegas Raiders grabbed cornerback Jack Jones from the waiver wire , and if he didn't play the way Pierce thought he could, then no big deal; he wasn't being paid much at all. But, Pierce strongly advocated for Jones and even said he was willing to put his job on the line for the 2024 season.
If he did play the way Pierce thought, they would have a Pro Bowl-caliber cornerback. And, well, they kind of do.
I guess it's safe to say it worked out. Jones is still getting better, and he is already a really good player that the Raiders will use to build their secondary around. And, better yet - he's a Raider. He fits the Raider way of old. And he's starting to look like he has the potential to be a top guy in this league at his position. But, there is still one thing holding him back in his very young career.
The young cornerback is entering his fourth season but has yet to play a full one.
"Take it week by week. I mean, I don't put too much pressure on myself, just take it week by week. It's football, just week by week," Jones said when asked how does he handle that notion.
If there is one thing Jones will bring, though, it's energy. He is constantly hyping up his teammates, and having the energy you need on any winning team.
"I'm excited. I mean, y'all see the energy we're bringing out there, it's different," Jones said. "You can feel it, you know what I'm saying. So, I think with that pressure and teams feeling that that swag, that team camaraderie that we got, I think that's going to break teams by itself just us going out there being a squad and coming together."
The thing holding Jones back - his availability - is not something that he can really control. Things happen, and a lot of time they are way out of your control, especially in the most physical sport there is. Jones has yet to play a full season, and has never played more than 13 games in a season.
But, if he can stay healthy, the sky is the limit for him. He's already got the confidence.
