The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is warning Wisconsinites not to consume Diamond Shruumz products − a brand of chocolate bars, cones and gummies with psychoactive compounds − as it may cause serious illness.

The products contain a blend of mushrooms and are available for purchase online and at retailers that sell hemp-derived and smoke/vape products.

"People who became ill from Diamond Shruumz-brand edibles reported a variety of severe symptoms including seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness, abnormal heart rates, high or low blood pressure, nausea, and vomiting," the release said.

The state, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration, is investigating reports of serious illness associated with Diamond Shruumz products. As of June 25, 39 total illnesses, with half leading to hospitalization, have been reported in 20 states, according to a Friday press release.

There have been no reported cases of illness in Wisconsin.

"Retailers should not sell or distribute any of these products and should hold them until further direction is given by the FDA," the release advised.

There have been other reports of illness related to an unregulated breed of cannabis product, often called delta-8. Neither delta-8 nor the mushroom-based edibles such as Diamond Shruumz are regulated in Wisconsin, making it easier for customers to get sick.

According to a CDC health advisory from June 12, several patients who were hospitalized after consuming Diamond Shruumz products required intubation, mechanical ventilation and admission to an intensive care unit.

The state health department is recommending anyone who has purchased these products to throw them away. If they became ill after eating these edibles, Wisconsinites can also call 800-222-1222 to report symptoms to the Wisconsin Poison Center.

Health care providers who suspect someone is ill as a result of these edibles are asked to report illnesses to the Wisconsin Poison Center or directly to the FDA.
