CAMDEN – With June’s temperatures already reaching the 90s, Camden is flipping the switch on its free fan and air conditioner program for senior citizens.

The program, for Camden residents 60 years old or over, starts on Monday. Fans can be picked up at five community centers.

Some air conditioners are available, but the resident must show a documented medical need, according to the city.

Last year, the city distributed 197 fans and 42 air-conditioning units, according to Vincent Basara, the city’s communications director.

Camden County runs a similar program for communities outside of Camden.

About 100 fans and 35 air conditioners on average are distributed each year in the non-Camden municipalities, Caryelle Lasher, director of the county Department of Health and Human Services, told TAPinto Camden.
