IRS offering tax relief to some victims of flooding, storms

WASHINGTON (KCAU) — The IRS announced Thursday that people and businesses recently affected by severe weather and flooding in northwest Iowa may be eligible for tax relief.

According to a release , those affected will be given until Nov. 1, 2024 to file or pay taxes with original deadlines on or after June 16, 2024 (the date that the IRS says recent severe weather began). This includes, for example, 2023 tax returns (though not payments) with filing deadlines that were extended to October.

The relief covers “individuals and households that reside or have a business in Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola, Plymouth, and Sioux counties,” the release states.

Taxpayers not in the covered area, but whose records necessary to meet a deadline are in the covered area, are also entitled to relief. Additionally, all relief workers affiliated with a recognized government or philanthropic organization assisting in the relief activities in the covered area and any individual visiting the covered disaster area who was killed or injured as a result of the disaster are entitled to relief.

Those affected can also claim disaster-related casualty losses on their 2024 or delayed 2023 tax returns.
