WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate at the detention facility died on Thursday after only being there since Tuesday

A news release from the SCSO says EMS was called to transport a male inmate, 37, who was housed in the Detention Facility Clinic, to a hospital due to irregular lab results.

The news release says that prior to EMS arriving at the jail, the inmate became unresponsive. Immediate medical attention was administered by onsite medical staff and responding EMS personnel, but he was pronounced dead.

The SCSO said the man was being held in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on a $150,000 felony warrant for contempt of court since June 25, 2024.

The SCSO said the inmate had a history of a chronic health problem, which clinic staff was treating him for. The preliminary cause of death is unknown, pending an autopsy.

The inmate’s family has been notified of his death, and his identity is being withheld at their request.

This is the fifth in-custody death in 2024.
