The Aurora City Council will consider using opioid settlement money Monday to pay for drug treatment for clients of its yet to open homeless services campus. The council will vote during its study session whether to spend money from the fund on a peer advisor, a van to transport clients from the navigation center to treatment, and a case manager. The city will receive about $14 million in opioid settlement funds, according to a presentation by city staff to the city council.

Two rural Georgia counties lost more than 12% of their population over the past three years, leading a worrisome trend in many of Georgia's rural counties and smaller towns. About 80 people overtook Aurora’s City Council meeting Monday, causing the mayor to recess the meeting three times in an effort to bring about order. The council then agreed to extend public invited to be heard beyond the one-hour time limit. The speakers showed up to chide the City Council for not punishing the officer that shot and killed Kilyn Lewis. Lewis was a suspect in a crime which is why police approached him. Body camera footage released by the Aurora Police Department showed Lewis did not have a gun and repeatedly yelled “I don’t have nothing!” with his hands in the air. Despite this, officer Michael Dieck killed him with a single shot from his rifle. Lewis never had more than a cell phone in his hand, the video showed.

The mother of a Denver homeless man told the City Council Monday that city-sponsored services have failed her son. Barbara Hallick Yeomans made her remarks during public comment period of the City Council meeting. She said her son grapples with substance abuse and mental illness and repeatedly has been harassed by police. She said her son also suffered verbal abuse by a guard in the Denver County Jail. Yeomans said she heard the guard harassing her son over the phone.

According to council member Amanda Sawyer, who chairs the Finance and Governance Committee, the city will have spent $155 million during an 18-month span from July 15, 2023, to Dec. 21, 2024.

The City and County of Denver likely will pay $500,000 next week to settle lawsuits against the police and sheriff’s departments. The City Council will vote Monday on two settlements. The first, stemming from a lawsuit filed against the police department in U.S. District Court, case 2023 CV00750-RM-JPO, is for $100,000. The second settlement is for $400,000 to be paid to Scott Peters and stems from a prisoner’s civil rights allegedly being violated, according to Justia. According to Justia, the lawsuit lists as defendants the City and County of Denver, Daniel Rodriguez, John Doe 1, John Doe 2, John Doe 3-12, Mohammed Mohammed, Michael Fitzmaurice, James Casias, Billie Humbles, Daniel Trujillo, Ian Schiffhauer, Michael Bennett, Cherif Sarr and Noreen Roberson. Additional information was not available Thursday.

Denver to pay $500,000 in lawsuit settlements against police, sheriff departments

The Denver City Council could decide to ask voters whether to remove the requirement that police and fire officials in the city be U.S. citizens. The Finance and Governance Committee will consider a bill Tuesday sponsored by Council President Jamie Torres and council member Amanda Sandoval. In an email to the author of this article, Torres said the Denver Sheriff’s Department already has made the switch to allow non-citizens. “In 2018, the Department of Justice found that the Denver Sheriff’s department was in violation of federal law when they required all applicants to be U.S. citizens. They have since changed their policy and now allow anyone with legal status to apply.”
