Michigan Man Sentenced for Sleeping Bear Dunes Vandalism

Benzie County, Mich. — Howard, a 63-year-old resident of Sparta and Frankfort, Michigan, has been sentenced following his involvement in tampering and vandalism at Sleeping Bear Dunes in 2022. U.S. Magistrate Judge Ray Kent presided over the case, delivering a verdict that includes 60 months of probation for Howard.

In addition to probation, Howard has been ordered to pay $22,472.22 in restitution to the National Park Service and U.S. Coast Guard. Court proceedings costs totaling $3,947.71 must also be covered by Howard.

As part of his probation terms, Howard is prohibited from accessing any National Park Service property, including the iconic Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Officials clarified that despite the severity of the vandalism, the government did not pursue imprisonment for Howard. The sentencing reflects Judge Kent's decision following Howard's trial.

This case underscores the importance of preserving natural landscapes and respecting national park regulations, reinforcing community efforts to safeguard cherished public spaces.
