    Chicken barbecue, fireworks Thursday

    SUGARCREEK − The Ragersville Historical Society will have a chicken barbecue starting at 4 p.m. Thursday. Chicken with two sides will be available for dine in or carryout for $10.     Kimble remains open during road work

    DOVER − Kimble Company’s facilities will remain accessible, and services for aggregate, recycling and disposal will not be affected during the upcoming Ohio Department of Transportation improvement project planned for state Route 39.

    Construction on the project will start tentatively on July 8 and includes a 45-day road closure of a small portion of state Route 39 in both directions. The Kimble entrance will remain open and accessible from state Route 39 west of the construction zone, according to a news release.

    Fireworks Festival is Friday and Saturday

    GNADENHUTTEN − The Gnadenhutten Fireworks Festival will be Friday and Saturday on the square with live music, parades, food, and fireworks display. Activities include a pet parade, talent show, bingo, car show, basketball and cornhole tournaments, and the Little Miss and Little Mr. Red, White & Blue contest.

    New board member for MWCD

    NEW PHILADELPHIA − Karl Gebhardt has been appointed to the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) board of directors by the conservancy court. The court is the 18-judge body that oversees MWCD operations and makes appointments to its board.

    Gebhardt led farmland preservation efforts for Ohio at the Department of Agriculture, and was deputy director of Water Resources and chief of the Division of Surface Water for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. He also served as deputy director at the Department of Natural Resources, overseeing its Division of Soil and Water Resources and leading the Ohio Lake Erie Commission. He was a township trustee and a member of the International Joint Commission’s Water Quality Board, a U.S-Canada body that works on shared issues impacting the Great Lakes. He has a master’s degree in public policy from The Ohio State University and a bachelor’s degree in business from Franklin University.

    Community concert Saturday

    NEW PHILADELPHIA − The New Philadelphia Community Concert Series continues from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the outdoor patio at the Lacey Performing Arts Center. The free series features local musicians. Melly West & the Sunshine Funtime Band and Nick Bonner and more are scheduled to perform Saturday.

    Tuscarawas insurance agency helps Garaway Schools

    SUGARCREEK − The Westfield Insurance Foundation partnered with Tuscarawas Insurance Agency to donate $5,500 to Garaway Schools as part of the Legacy of Caring program. Each year, Westfield’s top independent insurance agents are invited to nominate a local nonprofit in their community to receive a donation. Each year, grants are made to dozens of nonprofits in cities across Westfield’s national footprint.

    The Westfield Insurance Foundation, an independent private foundation endowed by Westfield, awards the donation to support their top agents’ local communities.

    School district wins recognition for healthier meals

    CARROLLTON − Carrollton Exempted Village School District received an ward for improving the nutritional quality of their school meals from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service in collaboration with Action for Healthy Kids.

    The Innovation in Nutrition Education Award winners implemented nutrition education activities that made classroom, cafeteria, community, and home connections for students and parents/guardians. Barbara Burns, nutrition director, and Kay Russell, outdoor educator coordinated, with the school cafeteria staff and the classroom teachers to provide nutrition education taste panels allowing students to learn about healthy, school grown produce and sample the harvested vegetables. The team introduced several new entrees using school grown hydroponically grown lettuces including a new chef salad, toppings for subs, wraps, and other entrees, offering a lunch makeover with lower sodium.
