The father-and-son management team of Scott Richards Sr. and Jr. welcomed guests to an Open House to celebrate the Grand Opening of their new Circleville location.

“It’s an honor to work with my son,” said Scott Richards Sr. at the grand opening in June. The two have been working together at Bo Lacey Construction (BLC) for the past 4 years, and were together full-time for 4 years before that.

Scott Sr. listed the wide variety of products and services they offer, which include roofing, siding, gutters, decks, replacement windows and bathroom remodeling.

At Bo Lacey, they most commonly use CertainTeed shingles on roofing projects. All of their installers are certified by the manufacturer, which is a requirement to be able to provide the 50-year warranty.

Scott Sr. explained, “The number one thing that will destroy your roofing is heat inside the attic. We focus on ventilation first, and then using good materials and making sure they are properly installed.”

For decking, they offer both TimberTech composite products and treated lumber, depending on which the customer prefers.

While Scott Sr. has been in the remodeling business for most of his career, Scott Jr. took a different path. Still, Scott Jr. had worked with his father off-and-on for most of his life.

“I was working at recruiting in the HR department at a large regional bank and I decided to get my MBA, thinking I would climb the corporate ladder in banking. About a month before I graduated, my entire department got laid off - totally unexpectedly,” said Scott Jr.

Scott Jr. decided to work with his father while he was finishing his MBA. In his last class, in a conversation with his professor at Northern Kentucky University, he explained his experience in the construction industry. By chance, it turned out that this professor was a business advisor for Bo Lacey Construction at their HQ in Mansfield.

That conversation led to an interview with Bo Lacey management who were looking to open up a second location, and Circleville looked like a great place. A Bo Lacey location will service anywhere within one and a half hours, so a Circleville location would allow them to cover almost all of southern Ohio. During their negotiations, Scott Jr. made it clear that he wanted his father to be his partner in the new location and run the production side.

“I was always the business mind,“ said Scott Jr., ”I do the sales … I have an undergraduate degree in accounting, but when it comes to the construction side … if something goes off the rails, something I’ve never seen before ... I don’t have that kind of knowledge.”

This arrangement allows Scott Sr. to spend 100% of his time managing the production side, making sure that the crews are up-to-date on their training, the deliveries are getting where they need to be, and customer concerns are being addressed very quickly.

"That couldn't happen I were trying to run everything myself," said Scott Jr.
