POSEY COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — Firefighters from Black Township Fire and Rescue and other agencies gathered Friday night for a “mass casualty incident” training at Farmersville Elementary School.

The event is allowing first responders to be prepared when disaster strikes.

45 volunteers mimicked victims from a real-life, deadly storm at a rock concert at the Indiana State Fair. First responders, firetrucks, ambulances and Indiana State Police were out to save the make-believe victims.

While surveying 200 acres of land, first responders controlled fires, flew drones to find victims and ride out in the field with medical equipment.

As first responders were out, Eyewitness News listened to parents and bystanders cry out where their children are. We also listened to victims wail in agony as they wait for attention.

One official says the first responders are dealing with multiple different situations all at once.

“They could be head injuries; they could be maybe an arm taken off. They’re mimicking all kinds of injuries and everything,” Black Township Assistant Chief Kevin Brown says. “There could be mimicking some deceased where they’re deceased and we no longer work on you.”

We also talked with a participant who pretends to be impaled by a stick and wants to get his family involved in its community.

“We brought our daughters out here, and we want them to get involved in it too and see what the emergency response team does and maybe get them prepared for if there was an emergency,” says Bryan Dowler, who serves as a volunteer.

Within 90 minutes, all volunteers were found.
