Reigning world champions Argentina aims to maintain their perfect record in Group A of the Copa America when they face Peru at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida on Saturday night.
While Argentina have already secured their spot in the knockout rounds, Peru must win to have any chance of advancing from the group stage.
Argentina became the first team to reach the quarterfinals with a narrow 1-0 victory over Chile in New Jersey. Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute, following his impact as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Canada.
Lionel Scaloni's side have already secured a top-two finish in Group A, with six points from two matches, but victory on Saturday will ensure they top their Copa America group for the first time since 2016.
Peru, runners-up in 2019 and semifinalists in 2021, are at risk of exiting the group stage for the first time since 1995. They have only one point from two matches, after a 0-0 draw with Chile and a 1-0 loss to Canada. The dismissal of Miguel Araujo in their match against Canada proved costly, as Peru struggled to find the net.
Jorge Fossati's side currently sit bottom of Group A, level on points with Chile. They need to beat Argentina and hope for a draw between Canada and Chile to progress. Goals have been hard to come by for Peru, and they have failed to score in their last four meetings with Argentina, making their task on Saturday a tough one.
But they have been boosted by the news that Lionel Messi will not play for La Albiceleste, after suffering a "problem" in the game against Chile.
