Canada vs. Chile final score, result: Canada qualifies for Copa America quarterfinals

Canada has qualified for the Copa America quarterfinals.

Les Rouges secured their historic place in the knockout rounds with a scoreless draw against Chile at Inter&Co. Stadium in Orlando, finishing in second place in Group A with four points and one goal scored in three games.

Back-to-back 2015 and 2016 winners Chile, which finished on two points, needed to beat Canada in order to make it to the knockout stages. However, a 27th-minute red card to left-back Gabriel Suazo made the challenge even harder for La Roja, and they spent most of the game soaking up pressure and waiting for a rare chance to attack or win a free-kick further up the field.

Alexis Sanchez, formerly of Arsenal and Manchester United, was subdued most of the match, being forced to defend or stay in his own half, while Canada was able to possess and quickly move up the field. But too often, between Cyle Larin, Jacob Shaffelburg and others, the final pass or finishing touch was missing.

Tani Oluwaseyi looked to have scored for Canada late in the match off a great feed from Tajon Buchanan, but Oluwaseyi was ruled offside. In the end, it didn't matter, as Canada moved on with plenty of work to do in the meantime.

Canada next will play the winner of Group B, likely Venezuela.

FULL TIME: Canada 0-0 Chile. Canada advances to the knockout stage out of Group A!

It wasn't an instant classic, but it was enough for Les Rouges to continue making history, making it to the final eight of the tournament in their first time at Copa America. Amazingly, Canada did it despite only scoring one goal in the group stage, through Jonathan David. Canada had plenty of chances to score on Saturday evening against Chile but bad finishing and passing let the team down.

The story of the game ultimately was Gabriel Suazo's red card in the 27th minute. That put Chile behind the eight ball and La Roja didn't have enough left in the tank to make a difference late. It's another disappointing Copa America for a proud nation, which won the tournament in 2015 and in 2016 on U.S. soil. Now, they're heading home earlier than they expected.

90th+7 min: One last chance for Chile, another long throw-in from the left. Everyone back for Canada in the box. It bounces dangerously in the box and eventually ends up at the feet of Sanchez. He faints shooting and moves further and further to his right, crossing in again, Crepeau gets a hand on it, nearly loses it, and then holds on. Canada may just do this.

90th+6 min: Another hopeful pass pumped into the box, Crepeau is off his line but Bombito reacts fastest and heads it to safety out wide.

90th+5 min: One more late change, Kamal Miller on for Canada in place of Jonathan David.

90th min+4: Chile push forward, a cross towards Brereton Diaz is cleared away but not until it's shot off Cornelius for a corner kick. The ensuing corner kick is cleared and then as Chile attempts to re-cross into the left side of the box, it goes out for a goal kick, as it was overhit.

90th min+2: OFFSIDE! Canada with a brilliant counter-attack, Buchanan centers the ball in from the right and Oluwaseyi with an instinctive first-time finish past Arias, but the flag is up. He was half-a-body offside, correct decision. Oluwaseyi disagrees.

90th min: Everyone up for Chile but Arias for a long throw-in on the left. It bounces around and nearly falls for Sanchez but it's chested back to Crepeau and he dives on it.

Six (6!) minutes of second-half stoppage time.

87th min: Crepeau off his line! The Canadian goalkeeper has some quick thinking to stop Brereton Diaz after a pass is played over the top of the Canada backline. Crepeau is out there before Brereton can get there and he clears it away to a teammate.

86th min: We just saw another replay of Buchanan's shot, he was onside and shot it right at Arias. Anything to his left or right is a goal. Meanwhile, Argentina goes up 2-0 over Peru, all but ensuring if Canada can hold on to a draw, that it will advance.

85th min: Canada with some good passing between the lines and moving it from the right side to the left, but the ball dies at the feet of Cornelius and it ends up with another turnover in the attacking third.

83rd min: Another quick Canada attack down the right, and Buchanan's cross in a four-on-four break is deflected away. Then Buchanan has a shot from a tight angle saved by Arias. Chile just holding on right now.

79th min: Canada has another counter-attack, Millar dribbles forward and Oluwaseyi is wide open down the middle, but Millar can't get it to him and Arias collects. He then lowers the shoulder into Oluwaseyi and both players are down. Oluwaseyi is called for the collision even though he got the worst of it.

76th min: More subs coming. For Canada, Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi are in for Larin and Laeyea. Ben Brereton Diaz enters for Davila.

74th min: Save Crepeau! Sanchez gets a shot off for the first time tonight, dribbling in towards goal on the right side of the box and firing a shot that takes a wicked deflection, bouncing high before Crepeau can knock it forward to ensure it doesn't cross the line. Still 0-0.

73rd min: Terrific hold-up play from Sanchez to keep possession and not turn the ball over quickly and it results in a nice counter-attack for Chile, which ends in a free kick after Eustaquio inadvertently fouls Davila.

71st min: Off a Canada corner kick, Millar picks it up to the left of the box and drives in, before cutting to his right and trying to curl one, but it misses the goal by five feet. Could have been a terrific goal with better technique.

69th min: Canada is calmly passing the ball around, perhaps too calmly as Cornelius turns it over on a simple pass forward. But it seems clear Canada knows it has the man advantage and that the Argentina result is in its favor.

65th min: Canada's first change sees Shaffelburg come out and be replaced by Liam Millar. Millar immediately earns a yellow card after chopping down Davila on a potential Chile counter-attack. Probably one of the fastest yellow cards ever.

63rd min: Potential problem for Chile. Arias is down and is pointing at his right hamstring, and he's trying to stretch it out. Chile could be down to their third-string goalkeeper.

61st min: Free kick to Chile. Sanchez takes it but it's cleared away by Bombito. Sanchez a minute later gets another chance to cross into the middle but it doesn't beat the first Canadian defender and it's cleared to safety. He's clearly frustrated thanks to the early red card and hasn't been able to influence the game much.

58th min: Yellow card to Canada's Alistair Johnston. Meanwhile, Argentina has scored against Peru in the other game, so if the result holds, Canada advances.

55th min: Chile wins a corner kick after some physical play down in the left corner. It's played long to Davila at the top of the box but his volley is all wrong. The clearance from Canada goes back to Chile though and it leads to a header from the top of the box that is an easy save for Crepeau. A missed opportunity for Chile.

52nd min: Larin is played into space in the right side of the box and he crosses on the ground in the middle and it's blocked by a heroic sliding tackle from Maripan. It appeared to go off his arm behind his body but the VAR declines to get involved.

49th min: Chilean players are ready to do anything to even up the numbers on the field. Davies mis-judges a long crossfield-pass and tries to do a low-headed pass and ends up getting a cleat in the head. While he's on the ground in pain, Chilean players surround referee Wilmer Roldan telling him Davies fouled their teammate (it was the other way around) and that he should earn his second yellow card.

Canada then goes on a quick attack down the right, Shaffelburg is available in the middle but it's too far for him to reach and he goes down under little contact. Referee waves play on.

2nd Half kickoff: We're back underway from Orlando. It's still 0-0, and as a reminder, Chile needs to win if it wants to make it to the knockout round. Canada can make it with a draw and an Argentina draw or win.

Halftime: Chile make two changes to start the second half. Eduardo Vargas and Marcelino Nunez are withdrawn. Marcos Bolados and Erick Pulgar enter.

Halftime: Canada 0-0 Chile. Chile is down to 10 men, which is the big story of the half. But the other story is how both teams have had chances to score, and got the final pass, or final shot, all wrong. It hasn't been pretty in the cooler central Florida night, but perhaps a break will be what Canada and Chile needs to play better in the second half.

Chile will need to release Alexis Sanchez quickly on the break. Meanwhile, Canada needs to use Shaffelburg down the left and Laryea down the right to deliver in crosses to Larin and David in the middle.

45th +1 min: Save Arias! Shaffelburg is played into the box down the left side, he doesn't like his options so he tries to beat Arias at his near post but the veteran makes the save. Arias has looked solid today.

45th min: Johnston with a nice one-two with Osorio but he overhits his cross as well and Isla chests it back to Arias.

Four minutes of first-half stoppage time.

44th min: Free kick to Canada, but Eustaquio airmails it over all his teammates.

42nd min: Save Arias! he comes off his line to deal with a cross and then finds himself way out of the goal but still saves Eustaquio's shot from just inside the box. Then, Chile looks to make a break down the left and Davies takes down Vargas, and it's a yellow card to Davies.

38th min: Free-kick to Chile, Nunez steps up and curls it to the far post but Crepeau reads it the whole way.

At the other end, a quick counter leads to Canada winning a corner kick but Jonathan David takes a big hit from the Chilean goalkeeper Arias and needs physio treatment.

36th min: Isla plays a nice one-two with Echeverria in midfield and then gets tangled up with Shaffelburg and both go down. No call from the ref, which draws the ire of the veteran Isla.

33rd min: Canada is dominating possession now, leading to the Chile fans increasing their whistles. Sounds like a great atmosphere in Orlando tonight.

Davies finds space down the left and powers in a cross that goes over everyone's head, even Laryea making a late run, and it's out for a throw-in. Missed opportunity for Canada.

30th min: Osorio is withdrawn for Chile and Thomas Galdames comes in to play left-back.

27th min: RED CARD FOR SUAZO! CHILE DOWN TO 10 MEN. It's gone from bad to worse for Chile as Suazo fouls Laryea on the break and is shown a second yellow card. It's a free kick for Canada, but it's cleared away well by Lichnovsky.

23rd min: Davila AGAIN wide, this time wide of the other post. Was that Alexis Sanchez rising high to win an aerial duel as well? Either way, Davila powers past Cornelius in the middle of the park and unleashes a strike on the half-volley that goes wide and out for a goal kick. Suddenly, Chile are looking confident and dangerous on the quick counter.

22th min: Davila just wide! Some good moments of possession from Chile and Davila unloads from 30-yards out and Crepeau helplessly watches the ball float a foot wide of goal. Best chance of the night for Chile so far.

20th min: Johnston gets away with a strong shoulder-to-shoulder challenge on the smaller Sanchez and he easily wins the ball back, but then Laryea loses the ball similarly and Chile win the ball back.

18th min: Save Arias! Canada is raising the pressure on Chile, as Arias punches away the initial corner, but it's recycled and sent in again from the left side into the middle. Johnston meets it and loops a header towards goal that Arias has to push over, just to be careful.

16th min: Another footrace, and again Laryea wins over his Chilean opponent (Suazo, in this case). Laryea wins a corner kick.

15th min: We're 15 minutes in and Alexis Sanchez has just two touches and passes to his name so far. Clearly, Chile need to get him involved more moving forward.

12th min: Tonight's referee Wilmar Roldan is quick to the book, as Gabriel Suazo is shown a yellow card for Chile for a reckless tackle. Both teams with one early yellow card now.

9th min: Terrific counter-press in the middle of the field for Canada leads to a turnover, and Osorio plays it quickly up to Larin, who is already a physical handful for the Chile defense. Larin plays it up to Davies, who ends up winning a corner kick. The ensuing corner is eventually cleared away.

7th min: Wow, an early yellow card is shown to Moise Bombito for a tackle on Victor Davila. Looked like Bombito missed the ball and landed on Davila's foot. Ouch!

5th min: Eduardo Vargas just tried to outrun Richie Laryea and found out pretty quickly he would never win that battle. Laryea wins the free-kick.

A quick ball forward leads to a chance for Shaffelburg down the right wing. We'll see if he switches sides at any point this half.

3rd min: Solid, fast passing forward by Canada and trying to play within the channels leads to a first corner kick after Maripan heads a searching lofted pass into the box out of play.

5 mins to kickoff: The teams are out on the field, and it's national anthem time!

10 mins to kickoff: Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni isn't the only suspended national team coach who won't be on the sidelines in Group A action tonight. Chile coach Ricardo Gareca was also hit with a one-game suspension by CONMEBOL for delaying the restart in Chile's last game, against Argentina.

30 mins until kickoff: Canada coach Jesse Marsch rewards Jacob Shaffelburg with a start after his tremendous performance off the bench against Peru. He dominated the left side and Peru couldn't keep him from delivering dangerous crosses over and over again.

45 mins until kickoff: The huge news is that Chile's Man of the Match in their 1-0 loss against Argentina, Claudio Bravo, is out of tonight's match against Canada. That's a massive loss for Chile and a huge boost to Canada. Gabriel Arias takes his place, but the veteran Argentine-born goalkeeper has never played club soccer outside the continent and has only 16 caps with Chile since 2018. The Chilean backline will be under a lot of pressure to keep the ball moving and help Arias feel comfortable coming off his line.

hour, 5 mins before kickoff: After the scorching heat of Kansas City, Kan. and New Jersey last match, tonight's game in Orlando will be considerably cooler. With showers in the area, the temperature is currently sitting at 75 degrees F.

1 hour, 20 mins before kickoff: Canada's 1-0 win over Peru was Les Rouges' first shutout against a South American opponent since a scoreless draw against Brazil in June 2001. Canada captain Alphonso Davies was less than 1-year-old at that time.

1 hour, 40 mins before kickoff: There's a ton on the line tonight for Canada and Chile in Orlando. If Argentina takes care of business with a win or draw against Peru, Canada only needs draw to advance over Chile. But Chile knows that it needs to win tonight, meaning that we should see some goals and plenty of end-to-end action in Central Florida.

Canada heads into their Copa America clash with Chile following a strategic half-time triple substitution in their win over Peru.

Derek Cornelius , Liam Millar and Ismael Kone , who were taken off early, may find themselves on the bench. Kamal Miller is expected to replace Cornelius in central defense, while Richie Laryea is likely to keep his spot at left-back, allowing Alphonso Davies to play further forward.
