On Sunday at State Farm Stadium, Mexico and Ecuador will clash in a crucial Copa America Group B match with a spot in the quarterfinals up for grabs.

Ecuador enters the game with three points and in second spot in the pool, having defeated Jamaica 3-1 but lost to Venezuela. They also hold a slight goal difference advantage.

Mexico, on the other hand, lost 1-0 to Venezuela and also beat the Jamaicans. That goal difference disadvantage means they must win if they are to stay alive in the tournament.

Coach Jaime Lozano knows it is a do-or-die situation, but is confident his side can get the job done.

"We have 90 minutes [left] and no one is getting off this ship and we will make it," said Lozano after the Venezuela defeat. "We're going to make it, of that I'm sure."

Despite their recent struggles, Mexico has a solid historical record against Ecuador in Copa America tournaments, winning four out of five meetings. However, their recent form against CONMEBOL teams has been challenging, losing six of their last seven encounters.

The Sporting News has all the details on how to watch the action on TV, online and via live stream.

Mexico vs. Ecuador lineups, team news

Mexico faces Ecuador without captain Edson Alvarez, who has been sidelined for the rest of the tournament due to a hamstring injury sustained against Jamaica. Luis Romo will likely continue as a holding midfielder alongside Luis Chavez in Alvarez's absence.

In the match against Venezuela, three newcomers — Cesar Huerta, Israel Reyes, and Alexis Vega — made their Copa America debuts as substitutes, adding depth to the Mexican squad. They could play some part again.

Mexico projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Gonzalez (GK) — Sanchez, Montes, Vasquez, Arteaga — Romo, Chavez — Antuna, Pineda, Quinones — Gimenez.

    Injured: Edson Alvarez
    Suspended: None

Meanwhile, Ecuador anticipates the return of Enner Valencia after his suspension following a red card in the opening match against Venezuela. Kevin Rodriguez led the attack in their match against Jamaica but is likely to be dropped to the bench with Kendry Paez set to keep his place.

Alan Minda could also be involved again after an international debut goal from the bench last time out.

Ecuador projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Dominguez (GK) — Preciado, Torres, Pacho, Hincapie — Franco, Caicedo — Yeboah, Paez, Sarmiento — Valencia.

    Injured: None
    Suspended: None

    Mexico vs. Ecuador prediction

    • Score prediction: Mexico 1-2 Ecuador

Mexico's struggles in front of goal could prove costly against a disciplined Ecuador team. Despite creating chances, El Tri has been unable to convert, which may continue to haunt them.

With Enner Valencia returning and a cohesive strategy under Felix Sanchez, Ecuador has the potential to exploit Mexico's defensive vulnerabilities.
