Group F winners Portugal will look to reassert their status among the Euro 2024 favourites when they meet Slovenia in the Round of 16 on Monday.

Portugal have one of the best squads in the tournament, but they haven't performed like that so far.

It was easy to make a case for them cruising through to the knockout stages. Instead, they struggled to overcome Czech Republic in their opener, spared by a last-gasp winner, and were humiliated 2-0 by lowly Georgia, with a convincing 3-0 win over Turkey sandwiched in between.

Cristiano Ronaldo's side will now need to bounce back and they face a tough test against a resilient Slovenian side, who arrive in Frankfurt for their first knockout match at a major tournament.

Slovenia drew all three of their Group C games, including a valiant goalless draw versus England last time out. They are not the type of side to excite you, but they are also no pushover.

Portugal vs. Slovenia lineups & team news

After Portugal's largely second-string XI was beaten in stunning fashion by Georgia, Roberto Martinez's side will be back to full strength for their Round of 16 encounter with Slovenia.

There were few noteworthy outliers, such as Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line in pursuit of a goal that never came, Diego Costa remaining between the sticks, and Joao Palhinha patrolling the engine room in the group finale.

All three should retain their places in Frankfurt, while other key men Bruno Fernandes , Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias should all come back into the lineup.

Martinez might change formation after a switch to a three-man backline in the dead-rubber against Georgia, with a 4-2-3-1 system likely to be anchored by midfielders Palhinha and Vitinha . Rafael Leao is back from suspension to take up his spot on the left flank ahead of Joao Felix .

Joao Cancelo should be favoured over Manchester United's Diogo Dalot , with Bernardo Silva a sure starter on the right wing. Pepe and Dias will form the central defensive partnership after Antonio Silva's error for Georgia's opening goal.

Portugal starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Costa (GK) — Cancelo, Pepe, Dias, Mendes — Vitinha, Palhinha — B. Silva, Fernandes, Leao — Ronaldo.

Slovenia's habit of fielding the same squad for every game at Euro 2024 will come to an end when they meet Portugal in the last 16.

Matjaz Kek has stuck with the same side throughout the Euros, helped by star striker Benjamin Sesko recovering from a slight knock to start the 0-0 draw against England.

However, left-back Erik Janza will be sidelined for this game having received his second booking of the tournament.

Alanyaspor defender Jure Balkovec is the likely replacement as Slovenia prepare to unfurl their tried-and-tested 4-4-2 formation against one of Europe's most potent attacks.

Slovenia starting lineup (4-4-2, right to left): Oblak — Karnicnik, Drkusic, Bijol, Balkovec — Stojanovic, Elsnik, Gnezda Cerin, Mlakar — Sporar, Sesko.

    Portugal vs. Slovenia prediction

    • Score prediction: Portugal 2-0 Slovenia

In their most recent encounter against England, Slovenia managed only one shot on goal while holding just 26% possession.

So, it will be an uphill task for a counter-attacking Slovenia to suddenly crank up the heat against a Portugal team that has them outclassed in nearly every department. Benjamin Sesko posts a goalscoring threat, and goalkeeper Jan Oblak may keep them in the game, but figuring out how Slovenia will get the ball to Sesko is difficult to answer.

Assuming Roberto Martinez opts against too much tinkering with tactics and personnel, Portugal should have too much attacking impetus for a stubborn Slovenian side to cope with.
