What is the difference between a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and Warning?

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect in Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire counties until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday.

There was a threat of severe weather as a line of strong to severe thunderstorms rolled through western Massachusetts on Sunday, but it is important to know the warning signs when it comes to severe thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service, a watch means to be prepared, as thunderstorms are possible in and near the watch area. During a thunderstorm watch, it is important to be ready if a severe storm warning is issued. A watch is issued when there is at least 50 percent confidence that a weather parameter meets warning criteria within 36 to 48 hours.

A warning means to take action, as severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar. Some of the warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property. Warnings typically encompass a small area, around the size of a city or a small county, that may be impacted by a large hail or damaging winds.
