56-year-old faked being CPS worker in order to target children, Texas officials say

A 56-year-old man is accused of sexual assault and impersonating a Child Protective Services worker so he could target children, Texas investigators said.

On June 18, investigators were contacted by the guardian of a child who said a man claiming to be a CPS worker had visited them, the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office said in a June 27 news release. The worker “gained access” to the child after convincing the guardian that he “needed to speak with” them, the sheriff’s office said.

The victim and their guardians “gave a good description of the suspect and of the suspects’ vehicle,” and deputies discovered the man and vehicle closely matched those from a similar incident that happened in November, in nearby Sulphur Springs.

A week later, on June 25, investigators identified Gerald Don Miller as the fake CPS worker, the sheriff’s office said.

“During the execution of the search warrant, detectives recovered property from Miller’s vehicle corroborating what the victim in Lamar County described,” according to investigators. “There was also evidence found in Miller’s vehicle linking him to the offense in Sulphur Springs.”

He was arrested and is facing charges of sexual assault and three counts of impersonating a public servant.

“Law Enforcement and Child Protective Services want to remind communities, that if they are ever involved with CPS, the CPS workers will carry accredited credentials and their workers will show proof of their accredited credentials before talking to you,” the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators believe there may be more victims unaccounted for and are asking anyone with information to contact local law enforcement.

Lamar County is a roughly 140-mile drive northeast from Fort Worth.
