Caitlin Clark had WNBA history in her sights on Sunday, but fell just short as her team earned a gritty win.

The Indiana Fever guard had a chance to set WNBA history in Sunday's game against the Phoenix Mercury, racking up double-digit points and assists into the fourth quarter of her team's win. She needed just one rebound to become the first rookie in league history to record a triple-double, but fell just short as she ended the game with 9.

Clark was subbed out on defense in the final minutes of the game. She ended the game with 15, points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds.

With the Fever nursing a 1-point lead and less than 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Clark sunk a pair of free throws to give her team an 85-82 lead. The Fever held on to win 88-82.

The Mercury opened the game on a 17-4 run held a 15-point lead just after halftime, but the Fever clawed back.

Clark has already picked up a number of records in her rookie season. In the first half of her team's game against the Seattle Storm on Thursday, it was announced that Clark  became the fastest player in league history to reach 300 points, 100 assists and 100 rebounds.
